A Guide to the Human Skeletal System

If you are keen to learn the skeletal system then you have come to the right place. Well, this article explains what the skeletal system does and what comprises it.

The bones of the body gives the body the mechanical support. All parts of the body get support from the skeletal system. Motion of the body is facilitated by the skeletal system.

The skeletal system consists of over 200 bones, cartilage, and ligaments. The bones, ligaments and the cartilage make up the skeleton structure of the body.

The bones and the teeth are the most visible in a model of the skeleton structure. All the constituent parts of the skeleton are visible to those who pay close attention to the model of the skeleton. The other basic parts of the skeleton apart from the bones is the ligaments and the cartilage.

For the proper functioning of the joints, the ligaments must be there. The connective tissues at the joints are what is known as the ligaments. On the other hand cartilage is responsible for the structure of the larynx and the nose. A cartilage is a bit more flexible than the bone, but it has more strength than the muscles.

The bones give the body the structure and enables movement. The brain is protected by the skull; the skull also gives face the structure. Up to the tune of over 30 bones consists the spine. The upper and lower limbs, as well as the girdles, make up the three limbs of the skeleton. The attachment of the four limbs to the vertebral column is facilitated by the girdles.

The brain is surrounded by several bones which make up the skull. The thoracic cavity enshrouds the heart and the lungs thereby giving them protection. The vertebral column is responsible for the structure and the protection of the spinal cord.

You should know that the muscles all over the body are attached to the bones. The movement signal to the muscles is always given by the nerves in the muscles. The contraction of the muscles is always informed by the nervous system. The movement is created between the joints and the bones when muscles contract.

The two groups of the bones consist of the axial and appendicular skeletons. The appendicular skeleton is responsible for the movement while the bones of the axial skeleton give protection to the inner organs.

The limbs and the girdles makes up the appendicular skeleton while the skull, vertebral column, thoracic cage comprises the axial skeleton.

The shape and functions of the bones facilitate the typing of the bones.
